Himalayan Salt Lamps 101

Why Get a Himalayan Salt Lamp?

If you've been in a health or wellness store lately, you've probably seen one: a Himalayan Salt Lamp. Himalayan Salt Lamps are hand-chiseled chunks of salt from the Himalayan Mountains, with a heat-generating bulb inside. If you're considering getting one for your home or office, here's everything you need to know!

Air Purifier

Salt is hygroscopic, meaning it attracts water molecules floating around in the air. If those water molecules happen to contain allergens, pollutants, or bacteria, those also get attracted to the lamp. To keep your lamp clean and in tip-top shape, wipe it down with a damp cloth weekly.

Negative Ion Generator

Himalayan Salt Lamps release negative ions into the air. In contrast, electronics such as your TV, computer monitor, and smart phone release positive ions.

Negative ions are associated with improved blood flow and decreased drowsiness, while positive ions are associated with aggravating allergies and sleep problems. By releasing negative ions into, the positive ions emanated by electronics become neutralized. In other words, salt lamps decrease the electromagnetic radiation emitted by electronics.

Negative ions are produced abundantly in nature by sunlight and moving water, such as waterfalls or ocean waves. Although the best way to get exposed to negative ions is to be out in nature, that's not always an option!

Unlike regular table salt (sodium chloride), Himalayan Salt also contains magnesium, potassium, and zinc, which give the salt its beautiful orange or pink colour. The colour will vary based on the amounts of these trace minerals. Himalayan Salt Lamps add a warm, ambient glow to any space. It creates a great environment for meditation, reflection, and sleep.

Enjoy your salt lamp!
