Winter Wellness + Essential Oils {recipes included}

Every year more and more people are on the hunt for natural solutions to support their overall wellbeing. Essential oils are volatile and potent compounds that are extracted from plants and we've rounded up a few of our favourites to use during the cold, dark months ahead! Whether you're struggling with holiday stress, a compromised immune system, or seasonal depression... here are a few of the top essential oils that we feel should be in everyone's wellness arsenal this season!

Oregano Essential Oil

Why: Oregano is a powerhouse essential oil when it comes to protecting your immune system. It also contains thymol which is a naturally occurring antifungal that helps protect the body against toxins. Carvacrol is the strongest phenol in Oregano oil and helps stop the growth of several bacteria. Last but not least, rosemarinic acid is the powerful antioxidant in Oregano oil that protects our bodies against free radicals.

How to Use: Mix a couple drops of Oregano with a carrier oil and massage onto the bottoms of your feet for extra immune support. Please note that Oregano is considered a hot oil and should not be applied neat.

Lemon Essential Oil

Why: Lemon is one of the most popular citrus oils, and comes rich in antioxidants. The great thing about Lemon essential oil is that it can be easily incorporated into your daily routine. It helps reduce inflammation, fight bacteria, fungi, boost energy and ease your digestive system. Additionally, Lemon oil stimulates lymphatic drainage which helps rid the body of waste. This makes it great for treating colds, coughs, and clearing the body of toxins.

How to Use: Add 1-2 drops of Lemon to your glass or stainless steel water bottle for a daily cleanse and immune support.

Frankincense Essential Oil

Why: The King of Oils! It not only helps our immune system, but it reduces pain, inflammation, stress, anxiety, and more. Frankincense has the ability to enhance our immune system, and assist in killing dangerous bacteria and viruses. It contains antiseptic, antimicrobial and disinfectant properties which make it necessary during virus season!

How to Use: Add 2-5 drops of Frankincense to your diffuser and enjoy the aromatic benefits. Blends well with Lavender, Sandalwood, Ginger, Lemon.

Peppermint + Eucalyptus Essential Oil

Why: Peppermint and Eucalyptus are a couple of the best essential oils that everyone should utilize during the winter season. We grouped these together because they’re very similar when it comes to uses and benefits. Peppermint and Eucalyptus both contain properties that are great for respiratory support, immune support, muscle aches and pains, headaches, nausea and more.

How to Use: Add 20 drops of Peppermint, Eucalyptus, or both to a nasal inhaler and breathe it in to clear congestion.

Arborvitae Essential Oil

Why: Arborvitae can be described as woody, majestic, and strong. Most people either love the scent or the complete opposite! It is less common but nonetheless, still a must-have oil for this time of the year. Arborvitae essential oil is high in tropolones, which are a group of chemicals known to protect against environmental and/or seasonal threats. Arborvitae contains cleansing properties and promotes healthy cell regeneration, respiratory support, and immune support.

Fun Fact: Arborvitae Trees can live for over 800 years. No wonder Arborvitae means “Tree of Life”!

How to Use: Add a few drops of Arborvitae to a carrier oil and rub onto the bottoms of feet for immune support, or rub on your chest for respiratory support.

Turmeric Essential Oil

Why: Due to Turmeric’s antiseptic, antimicrobial, antibacterial, and antiparasitic qualitiesit has the ability to enhance your body's natural defence system. By releasing an antioxidant called bilirubin, Turmeric strengthens your immune system's response to common infections. Turmeric can also help reduce joint pain, respiratory issues, eczema, and more.
