Gardening With Essential Oils {with DIY insect repellant!}

How to Garden with Essential Oils

With spring finally here, if you’re like us you are probably anxious to get your hands dirty in the garden preparing for the season ahead. With all of the hard work that goes into making your garden beautiful, nothing is more frustrating than watching the fruits of your labour being destroyed by pests as they take over.

This week we want to share our favourite all natural garden sprays so you can keep all those bugs at bay. When growing delicious fruits and vegetables the last thing you want to use are harmful chemicals that can be hazardous to your health and the environment. Growing your own organic food without pesticides, herbicides, or fungicides really is the way to go and Essential Oils will allow you to do just that. Gardeners often use companion planting techniques to keep pests away. Essential oils work in a similar way and because they are far more concentrated than the herbs and plants themselves it makes them far more effective in warding off unwanted guests.

The following recipes will keep away bugs, vermin as well as mold and fungus.

Broad-Spectrum All Natural Insect Repellant Mix

  • 20 drops Peppermint essential oil

  • 20 drops White Fir essential oil

  • 20 drops Thyme essential oil

  • 20 drops Cedarwood essential oil

  • 20 drops Spearmint essential oil

  • 20 drops Lemongrass essential oil

Add all oils into a 500 ml spray bottle and fill the rest with Witch Hazel. Shake well before use. Spray on plants or anywhere you want to get rid up bugs.

Fungus Prevention

To keep away garden fungus “which causes around 85% of all plant diseases” use tea tree oil because it has “the power to prevent as well as well as kill several species of fungus.”

Mix 1 tablespoon of tea tree oil per cup of water mixed together in a spray bottle. Apply directly to infected plants once or twice per week. Don’t spray leaves when in direct sunlight because the mixture will burn the leaves.

Snail and Slug Prevention

Add a 20 drops of Cedarwood essential oil and 20 drops of Hyssop essential oil to a 60 ml glass spray bottle.Top up with water and spray on plants to keep slugs away.

For the fuzzy friends who like to visit our gardens, like cats and mice, the following spray will do the trick.

  •  20 drops Peppermint essential oil
  • 20 drops Rosemary essential oil

Add all essential oils into a 60 ml glass spray bottle and top up with Witch Hazel.
